K I T E S U R F I N G L O C A T I O N S - S.E. Q L D

400 Kms - Hervey Bay to NSW border (This Version 2012).

maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=216246232897544574554.0004ce1b19ac7c8f895da&msa=0

The information structure. (Tick in a box - turns references on/off) - Satellite view is best.

COLOUR Coding (as per NSW)
a) Green easy identified as beginner where sensible
b) Yellow intermediate
c) Red - warning, read for relevant details.

LOCATION
1) Direction: Range & if applicable best direction
2) Hazhards: objects & conditions (+ any financial!!)
3) Description: tips + good/bad points
4) Restrictions: (ignored if none)
5) Level: kite skills - re-enforce if conditions alter general approach.

Entry 5) for Level is conservative -- Match your skill to conditions, some days are terrific for 'P' platers in an intermediate area, and a great experience. This is totally dependent on the conditions.

Where to kite in SE QLD so many spots ,it really depends on your level , total beginner ( shallow flat water no crowds ) or wave chasing (head high waves cross-shore ) or dead flat super smooth water (free style ). Im at Noosa so my favourite spot is Noosa river mouth ,Lake weyba and Sunrise beach. But the whole coast is pretty good. Heres a few pics,
Lake Weyba,

Noosa River mouth

Sunrise Beach

Hope this is interesting

Noosa river mouth only works in North or North East with out going tide and its best at nearly full low tide
Lake Weyba is best in East but works SSW to ENE if you know where to go {down winder in SSW ]
Castaways Northerly right through to South
Hope this helps

Hi guys, I've moved to Brisbane a few weeks ago and it seems like a windy weekend ahead of us, is there any spot for Westerly around Brisbane? I don't mind driving farther away if I have to. I haven't had a chance to kite for months.

I came from Tassie so colder weather doesn't scare me, it's more like summer now for me actually.

Hi Salvatore
Not sure what you are using to access web - but the first post (Where to kite in SE QLD - has a hot link to google maps with all the sites - just go on and play :]) )..

If you are on a phone / small screen - U need to tap the writing at the bottom of the screen. Then the sites North to South..
then suggest tick the satellite view and then ... 44 more worth sampling to get an idea of the layout.

Essentially we face east so 90%+ sites take some sort of easterly.

The exceptions N 2 S... the links are part of the map...
Elliot Heads - a weekend camping trip 3+ hours north of Brisbane straight up the Bruce Hiway..
Inskip - camping or stay in Rainbow beach - this is one of the places 2 catch a barge for Fraser Island - need a 4WD to get to the end - but access to 90%of spit is ok for a car.

then more practical for this W/E
Southern end of Bribie island called Bongaree
www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1TAirzud8RXT-EpLY_i6DZx9yuVQ& sa=0& tm_source=seabreeze.com.au& l=-27.09129999999998%2C153.15941299999997& =14

In town - Wellington Point (Read comments - v.popular boaties parking / launch spot)
www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1TAirzud8RXT-EpLY_i6DZx9yuVQ& sa=0& tm_source=seabreeze.com.au& l=-27.457920497332488%2C153.242626111145& =14

Northern end of Gold Coast... near Sea World...
Site called The Red Barge - (never been but every where there is usable)
www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1TAirzud8RXT-EpLY_i6DZx9yuVQ& sa=0& tm_source=seabreeze.com.au& l=-27.949526000000024%2C153.421926& =14

There are others around the bay but these require a boat.. or a trip to North Straddie Island will get you to some..
Cheers

Hey guys, what about Nudgee beach? Is it confirmed that it's restricted zone due to the airport? I don't imagine 24m lines would be anywhere close a starting airplane but who knows what's the law.

www.bne.com.au/sites/default/files/no-index/Brisbane_Airport_Prescribed_Airspace_Future_Ols_BAC171348O000003_Revision-1_0.pdf

That's a map showing obstacle limitation service for Brisbane airport and if I'm not mistaken at nudgee beaches we are already at 40 meters which means anything that's lower than 40 meters is okay. Thoughts?

Aviation regs say no kite flying within 4kms of an airfield /airport and to remain clear of approach and departure flight paths. Nudge Beach is less than 2.5kms from Brisbane Airport. But you could wingfoil there.

Civil Aviation Regulations 1988
260 Manned fixed balloons and kites
(2) A person must not fly a fixed balloon or kite within 4000 metres of an aerodrome or at a height of more than 300 feet if the following requirements are not satisfied:
(a) the person has CASA's permission to fly the balloon or kite at that height;
(b) the flight is in accordance with the terms of that permission.

Kite is a landbased single line style kite which can have fishing line and be run upto 2-400metres
If u are super keen I will ask a distant cousin who was a traffic control at the airport.
When I setup the zone as no go it was a broadbrush without making an enquiry.... Same for coolongatta airport....
There are a huge number of other places...

yeah mate, I guess it would be nice to have a definite answer as Nudgee is much closer to where I live, it makes all the difference especially when the traffic builds up after 3 pm. But don't worry about that if I'm the only one asking

Periodic bump...
Planned updates - a beginners where to foil heading - the assumption here is once you are good enough you can head off the beach...
My knowledge is very specific to the Sunny Coast
I will be adding a few others of the more sheltered sites I am aware of - but feel free to PM updates and input.
Essentially a launch spot without open beach breaking waves.. With 1 metre plus easy access water depth..
Be relevant for Wing-Dinging too.

Cheers

Hi AP
i had a phenomenal session at Norman Point at the end of the Esplanade in Tin Can Bay a few weeks ago. Only two of us out, other dude was from Brissy and staying there fir the week. Worked well in outgoing tide on a NE. I'd say intermediate and above, hazards are anchored boats and traffic in the channel. As tide drops more more sand banks are exposed, quite a large tidal variation but current didn't seem too strong. A little further south at Wes Mitchell Park might make a pretty good beginners spot with large shallow area at the high tide but it's all exposed sand at low tide. Hope this helps, maybe check it out if you can before putting it on your map. Speaking of which, awesome job mate, love that map and have used it many times when looking for a kite spot when I'm working in a new area. Thanks Legend

That would put the lower half of Sandgate beach out of legal exclusion as well my friend. We used to kite it regular, on the northerly. Now with the new runway, who knows.
Like any of these regulations it depends. Where do you measure your exclusion area? From the tower or the northern point of the new runway? One thing is for sure, no police or federal agent are going to pull out the map and draw a circle to prove where it is. They wouldn't have a clue.
