We are starting a Junior Windsurfing Squad at RQYS so putting a call out to anyone with kids that may be interested to come down and have a look.
Details below
When: Every second Sunday 9.00am to 11.30am (High Tides. Light Winds) starting this Sunday 20/9/20
Where: Royal Qld Yacht Squadron Windsurfing Centre
Why: To create a new cohort of young windsurfers and introduce new people to the awesome sport of windsurfing
Format: Informal sessions based around teaching some new skills, developing confidence, creating a social friendship group and an introduction to some friendly competition. This is very much aimed at Juniors and Youth starting out so we will be staying very close to the beach and the sessions will be largely aimed at just getting time on the water in a fun and safe environment. We have pathways at the club to accomodate kids wanting to progress into more stuctured competitive based sailing.
Who: Junior and Youth Club Members, non members can purchase a daily sail pass (details below)
Gear Required: Any windsurf gear is welcome so BYO
Or
Hire Gear is available at the following rates
Bic Windsup c/w 3.5 or 4.5 rig hired at $30.00 per session
Bic Techno 293OD c/w 5.8, 6.8, 7.8 rigs leased at $150.00 per school term (this option allows use of the gear 7 days a week for the duration of the lease)
PPE: Life jackets and shoes will be mandatory and we can provide the life jackets, sun protection is required as well (BYO)
Cost: Free to club members (volunteer based so parents are encouraged to assist)
Non members will require a sail pass and costs are as follows
First 3 visits are free
4-6 visits are $15.00ea
7-12 visit are 35.00ea
It works out better to just join as a member if you plan to come as a regular (Junior Membership $200/year or $18.00 monthly)
This is not a learn to windsurf course, RQYS will be starting learn to Windsurf Courses in the near future. Parents wishing to teach their own kids and hire the learning equipment are welcome to attend or even bring your own if you just want the social interaction for the kids.
Looking forward to having a great season with a bunch of new windsurfers
Great morning on the Water. It was so great for the kids to be out on the boards enjoying the water. Thanks so much Cam for organizing and providing such a fun and encouraging atmosphere.
Another session planned for this coming Sunday 18th Oct, same time 9.00 am to 11.30 am.
Bit of a treat this Sunday, Shari O'Brien will be taking this weeks session. Shari is a Current and Qualified Windsurfing Instructor, she is also the Vice President of Windsurfing Qld and a Race Director for Bayside Sailboards, and she has stood on the podium in National RSX, Formula and Slalom events and in a Raceboard World Championship as well. A passionate windsurfer and really nice person so it should be a really good session. Here's a pic of her in action.
Another session planned for this Sunday the 1st of November. Big thankyou to Shari for helping out last session, she said everyone handled the windy conditions really well and she was super impressed. I am sure we will see her again soon as she had a really good time.
Forecast is looking windy at the moment from the North so the plan will be to duck around the corner into Lota to get out of chop. There will be a learn to windsurf course happening at the same time so we will have a chance to showoff our skills. Look forward to seeing everyone Sunday Morning.
We had a good session yesterday, 5 young sailors took to the water, it was really pleasing to see them get back to the beach in a gustly offshore breeze by themselves, its great watching their skills and confidence grow.
Big thanks to Scot and Ben (a couple of our youth sailors) for coming down and vounteering their time to help the next group of kids to windsurf. I know this group really looks up to you guys as role models.

looks like it will be great weather to get on the bay.
Another great day for the youth squad. Big thanks to Cam, Scotty & Ben.
I think that's the most fun Mitchell's had at a windsurf session.

Those hands will soon toughen, he'll be flying past all of us in no time!
Next session planned is for this coming Sunday 29/11 9.00a.m.to 11.30 am.
Handing this session over to our youth sailors to run, Lauren and Scott will be taking this session, I will be racing in the Sail Brisbane Regatta that is taking place at the same time. Both Lauren and Scott are accomplished racers having stood on the Podium in Techno293 class at regional and National competitions. Lauren is a qualified AS Windsurfing Instructor and teaches Learn to Windsurf courses at RQ whilst Scott is our chief gear tester as he has a talent for finding any weaknesses in equipment .
P.S these guys are great muso's as well, they did a gig together at the Manly Deck for the Raceboard Nationals earlier this year that blew everyone away. Below is a link to Scotty's band.

It was a great day today, the crew did their first proper races! Very impressed with how well everyone handled a bit more breeze, some future stars among us for sure!
Last session before Christmas this coming Sunday 13/12 9.00 a.m. to 11.30a.m.
Looks like it will be windy
Looking a little bit sketchy for Sunday, if the forecast is anything close to correct we will cancel. I will put something up Saturday night to confirm plans.
Windsurf squad is cancelled for tomorrow Sunday 13/12 due to the weather. This was going to be the last session for the year, we will have a break over Christmas and New period and come back early next year. Keep an eye out for the next session.
Merry Christmas to everyone, hopefully Santa brings windsurfing kit.
First session for 2021 is this coming Sunday 17th Jan, usual time 9.00am to 11.30am at the RQ WIndsurfing Centre. Looking forward to seeing everyone back after the break.
Hi - seen this forum and would be very keen to bring my kids to some of these sessions, possibly tomorrow (31 Jan). Do I need to confirm that we'll be there or is it ok to just show up? I don't have any kids gear of my own.

It's ok to just show up there is no need to book or register however if you want to hire gear that needs to be arranged with the sailing office beforehand.
Also you need to be a club member to participate, if you are not you can get a daily sail pass pass from reception when you arrive that will give you access to the club.
Details are at the first post of this thread
Next session this coming Sunday 2/3 at 9.00am. Shari will be taking this session so happy days . Thanks Shari
Sunday 28th, 9.00 to 11.30 am. This will be the last session for the season then we will take a break over winter and start up again in Spring.
We have had great turn outs every session from participants so I want to thank all the sailors (and parents) for supporting the initiative and also a big thankyou to the volunteers for freely giving their time and expertise to help others progress in the sport.
Look forward to seeing you all again Sunday morning
