This is what I've been riding the past 4 days. It's my go to in solid waves but I've had it out in waist high/onshore to 4ft+ offshore over the weekend and it's been a blast.
6'3, double bump flyers, 4 channel with Widowmaker fin set up. Love this fin set up btw, allows you to draw single fin lines but more thruster like performance in the lip. Uses bigger side bites and smaller center than traditional 2+1 set ups.

Lacey I know your a frustrated shortboarder hanging in a longboard room because there is little action next door so why not have a shortboard room for people like you, special people just like you

Hey Toobz,

Can you expand a bit more on your thoughts on the single fin compared to a standard thruster setup? More hold? I'm looking at getting something for bigger days having recently snapped a mid length in some juice. It was a 2+1 and had good paddle in but didn't really have the hold I was thinking it would. I'm not sure if the problem is rail shape or rocker or a combination of both.

Also going I'm going to go 7'6 next time. Is that too short for a triple stringer?

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Hey mate,
Yes hold is definitely one benefit I find with this fin set up. Having said that this particular board is quite "refined" compared to my other NPJ's so low volume rails, refined through the tail and very different channel set up which all help in the hold department. Other benefits I like are adjustability with the box fin, obviously moving fin forward really loosens the board up and vice versa. This fin set up seems to also give the board a bigger sweet spot, so essentially allows it to be ridden further forward if you desire. Comes in handy in barrels or if you like to move around on your boards.
With out seeing the board I'm not sure I can give you an answer (or at least my novice opinion) but I suspect chunky/soft rails could of been an issue? Maybe bottom contours creating too much lift if board was designed for smaller waves causing it to skip out? Could be a lot of things.
I definitely think the Widowmaker setup works well in step ups but it depends what you're into. You can get small box fins now so I guess one could run it as a straight thruster if they didn't like the WM set up.

Cause if they were so good then why do we have evolution too the boards of today .... Im all for a the restoration of a former board, but not the production of a "retro". Even if it said to be a retro with modern twist / tweets / styling etc etc ..cause then it is not a retro , it is evolution to the new.
So, I guess I'll don the flame suit now and get ready

Stoked you had an awesome session... Always love it when you hit a board you haven't surfed for awhile and you just click

Surf whatever makes you happy dude...

I enjoy riding a range of boards, some days are log days, some days are mid cruiser days, some days are fast and sucky and I surf the shorter stuff... That said, i get no joy from trying to pump a 3 fin thruster sb these days, had a red hot crack the other day and nearly hugged Lizzy when i got her back...

But going big because your resigned to not being able to surf shorter stuff is BS, most of us can to get fitter and trim a few kg's and get amongst it, its all a state of mind....

But again, lifes too short to not LOVE your surf experiences... So surf whatever makes you happy
