Just wonder if anyone else uses this technique to get their board back .?
so your in the water ,the leg with the legroom attached you put at the back and with the other foot you push down on the Leggie
which pulls your board back ,when your using a 10 foot leggie in big surf ,its good to use this technique .
i've been doing this more often as a SUPer ,due to having a paddle in hand .
catch it with one hand as it comes tearing back ,watch ya teeth .

Interesting technique. Do you use it in both shallow and deep water? Probably safer than pulling it back towards you with your hand where there is a small risk of getting your fingers caught in a loop.

Cheers

You may still be a freak Tardy but you're not alone...

I do a variation of this and kick the leg attached to the rope down and backwards which achieves the same thing. If the leggie is loose (as in the board is not that far away but still out of reach) then I would use your technique.

Yeah, all the time. Seems to work on 8-10 ft leashes, but on my 12ft ones there is too much slack.

Works for me too, but I never use a leash longer than 8' but they do stretch a fair bit.

I do it different

for shorter leggies using the same leg the leggies attached to - wrap the rope under the foot and push down... works a treat.

doesnt work if the board is close to you, but if thats the case you dont need to pull it any closer :)

I use a waist leash. I guess it should still work?

I use a knee leash, one advantage is that it makes it a lot easier to grab with your hand and pull board towards you, not that I had thought about it much until this thread.

Using an ankle cuff
I pretty much always push the board away from me as I go down,
so the leash is tight when the wave passes and I simply kick down and back to pull my board back.

Last swell was big, so I wore a 10' leash which is much harder to get back because it's too damn long.
But it serves it's purpose in bigger waves.

Never stepped on it, just a bit of a pull gets it back, will keep that in mind though.

Got stuck on the inside at Yallingup once, could not believe how far my legrope had stretched, felt like I needed a hose reel to get the board back, it went back to shape a short time later

yes 10 is a bit too long ,but when its big and I'm using that 9.11 insane ,its not as draggy on ya ,
you can also take out more people with a longer leash ,10 foot +9.11 thats a 19.11 foot kill zone ,
the 8,7 placid is easier on the crowds 8+8,7 is only 16.7 foot ,so I have more friend s then .

Ian i tried the knee leash and yes its easier to grab ,but it pulled my knee sideways one day and stuff up me knee ..plus found it tangled up in my paddle
so not a fan of them in size .

great wave souwester, yallingup .keep your eyes open at whale season for them whites .we don't have seals ,so not as bad here
we only have hammerhead ,grey nurse ,tiger sharks and a few others so its all good

Love Yals Tardy, surfed it up to 2.5m (locals would call this small, I call it big as hell!) was really fun but needed to be vigilant.

I bought a heavy duty legrope for that reason, I swear it stretched to double its length that day.

Def. that time of year down that way, first time I surfed there was this time of year and had an episode that involved a GW.

Funny you should mention about the knee leash causing you trouble, Tardy, I went to the knee Leash after hurting my hip, caused by pressure from an ankle leash wipe out in big surf, it felt like my hip was pulled out of joint. Now I use the knee leash and instinctively bend my knee when I come off.

ahhh the beauty of getting old

i had to dive under a few big ones today ,both hands on the paddle and use it as a sea anchor under water ,beats getting dragged too far in .
you can really feel the drag on the paddle ..
