Brenno, you inadvertently helped me choose this board. Gong Zero 9', 29.5, 115L.. First few surfs and I can't stop smiling! I'm a very average intermediate that made my way down to a 7'8 115L and realised I'm missing out.. Happy to have some speed in the lineup again. Biggest relevation are the thin rails..
Wow, that looks like a freakin' speed machine!
Nice job, bet you have heaps of fun on that.
How wide was your 7'8 to have the same volume as the 9'0?? Must've been like 5" thick!
My 6'10" has 125 liters and my 9'3" 118 liters. Both are my small wave boards, the first as a loose a skimboard, the second as a blade slicing the water... different ways to have fun.
IanInca, yes, Gong rocker and rails are something you get hooked on once you experience them.... enjoy! The Zero will be able to tackle any conditions.
If you are wearing boots, check the pad after each session. It is so grippy that some boots may unglue some of the pad narrow bands between the slots. Just re-glue then with MS-Polymer glue as soon as you discover them and everything will be fine.

It's the Hypernut 7'8, 30", 115L which is fun on small waves but found it a little hard to control in any size or fast waves. Coupled with how slow it was to paddle/take off I made the change.
The weird thing is on the wave the Gong doesn't feel like a big board and the rails gave me the confidence to lock into some v.fast dumpy/hollowish inside sections when I would normally bail..... I locked the rail in got low down and flew... Absolute revolation! The 2nd surf I was the only Sup out, some v. good short board prone surfers all better than me. I went to the other side of the bay (not quite as good) and scored wave after wave. Probably double their wave count and twice as long as their waves.. Happy days ahead!!
What's the recent goss on the board mate? I have made some room on my rack for a new toy and I'm thinking a small hipster! Just not sure on The 28 or 29...

I haven't had the 10 x 29 out since this one arrived. We've been thoroughly spoilt wave wise for the longest stretch anyone can remember. It's finally dropped off in time for some whale watching. I've had the 9 x 28 out in overhead, wally beach breaks leaning my full weight on the tail pad, driving it, down to this morning's knee high point break rollers, with my back foot in front of the handle and my front up on the nose. So much fun just tucked in with my bum resting on my back heel and letting the paddle blade skim the lip, weightless. Effortless glide.
A really fun board, loving it.
My new 9.0 x 29 Hipster Longboard
Such a fun board , catches waves so easy , glides well and takes the drop easy on decent waves
Becoming my go to board next to my 8.3 Creek

I'm just tossing up to go the 28 or the 29. The 10 x 29 is super solid no issues at all there.
Do you find the 28 Stable in less than ideal conditions? Or is it comfortable in most conditions?

Comfortable in most. Got used to it pretty quickly, and improving all the time.
If you already have a 29 wide bite the bullet mate.
Then you'll have the best of both worlds
Hi Brenno,
re- Fins.
Are you running stock fins in your 9' or have you shifted your AP 5'79 fins over from the 10' ?
With you n Cbigsup 's feedback on the AP's ,thinking of getting a set for Bali coast loop roadie in July. Sounds like we will get smaller, softer waves around the the topside. Cheers

Hi Bighugg,
I'm running the AP's in anything up to head high, and the Smiks over that.
As much as I love the feel and flex of the AP's, they are a laminate fin and I have broken a couple of side fins, one on my ar5e cheek, and one down a really steep face that pulled the front tab out of the box (may have been loose), and snapped off the rear tab. Goooooooooone. Not sure how I didn't eat sh1t, it was a bit like handling a car whilst drifting at speed, after a rear tyre blow out, with sand rapidly approaching. The silver lining was that out of 2 sets I had broken opposing side fins, and still had a full set!
The Smik fins are bullet proof, and obviously well trialed by Scotty and the mob. After dialing in the 9 footer, they work, even though I prefer the AP's for fun days.
Cheers mate
Thanks for sharing.
Will see what I can track down, not into the greys on the latest batch of 5'79s . Enjoy
Shapers just released new AP 5.79 in different colors. I think they are glass rather than cork.
But that's easy for you blokes to find out.
The cork ones work great in mushier summer waves.
After Brenno's experience I am gonna tighten mine up.
Am also experimenting with a slighter larger trailer way forward.
Carve from the tail, yet super stable on the nose with the 5.79 AP monstah's!
Are you using some type of fin box adaptor for that trailing fin brenno?
Yep.
FCS longboard fin adapter.
From Surf fx from memory. They were the cheapest.
Good bit of kit to have, used it heaps.
Yep! I think they are stiffer than the cork ones I have.
I am sure shapers would help suss that out..

Reenactment of Dhusouth ordering his Smik custom:
Dhusouth: Hey Scotty, love your work. Need anything else to get started on my custom Hipster Longboard? You feelin' it?
Scotty: Hey Dhusouth. Pretty much all good. Board's going to be awesome. Just need your input on the colour scheme. If you check out the Smik Instagram account, you'll see we have been doing some mint colour combos lately. The custom boards are looking really smik (heehee). We got reds, yellows, blacks, rainbow combos, it's awesome man. People are so creative. My team are loving it. What are you thinking? Push the envelope?
Dhusouth: you know what Scotty, I'm feeling fancy today, let's mix it up and give you some creative license to go a bit crazy. How about I give you three colour options and see what you can come up with?
Scotty: sure man, give it to me.
Dhusouth: Here you go...you ready for this...go: offwhite, stucco, and mother of pearl!!! How's that! I'm going all out. I'm unstoppable!! You do your thing Scotty!! Can't wait.
Scotty: oh...ok. Thanks for the creative license...(I guess the board will still rip). Can I push it to beige?
Dhusouth: Beige? c'mon man, let's not go troppo. Who am I, Mr La Dee Da? Stick to the programme. Can't wait to see it. Seeya.
Scotty: bye...
LOL ..... DHUP..... ENJOY
I sent Scotty a pic of my daily duds n caps , gave him free rein to funk it up.
Was doubley stoked , awsome graphics and got to thank Scotty in person.

Awesome Bhugg. I'm pretty sure Dhusouth sent Scotty a pair of his tighty whiteys with his order. When he shows the underneath of his custom, you can see a slight brown streak down the middle. Thought it was some kind of thick wooden stringer at first.

Bored at work. You know how it is.
Photos look good. Though will need to put 'em up on your big screen to get a decent look.
Will do, I'm just a few years behind. Just need to put in the hard yards at work for now.
Will try and come down on a weekend when there's good conditions for a surf, hopefully next few weeks. The kid's sport makes it hard to organise though atm. D.
Hi guys I just got my custom hipster longboard. 9.5 x 29.
Only used twice surf coast Vic. but happy with the fin setup. wondering what the effect is with a slightly bigger trailer. Would it track better and faster in the slower fatter waves we seem to be getting here lately. It seems to bogg down a bit until I get back on the the tail then releases and is really loose and manoeuvrerable.
Thanks
Dale

G'day Dale
Have found a larger centre fin is more of a hinderance than a help.
With the hipster longboard in terms of turning, yes, they are designed to be ridden more from the back of the board.
Trim is ok when there's a little juice in the wave from midships, but because of it's concave mid as opposed to the style lords heavy V concave, in the middle, there's a bit more leg work up and down the board to get the most out of her.
But in short. Nah. Bigger centre fins with the twinny set up not really the go. Flow is lost.
cheers
