Hi All,

Anyone tried a bigger WingDing in Perth. The 4m is going well and interested to see if anyone has gone bigger?
Cheers

Just got a 5m. I have not used it yet though. The aim is to get out in 12 knots. All the crew who have them down here rave about the power difference compared to a 4m. It should be too @ 20% larger. Will report back.

Using a 5m F-one wing and a 1900 foil can get going in around 10 kts with a bit of pumping. Have also used it in around 25kts with a smaller foil. My arms start to complain in the stronger winds though. Much nicer using a 3.5 in those conditions.

Good to know, I'm considering a 6m for 8kts or there about. I want to go after offshore days in particular.

Had the first generation Gong 7m, easy to foil with in 12kts, the wing just pulls like a Mack truck. Found the wing well made with good service, price point (+/- $900) and delivery from Gong. Didn't like the batterns which Duotone also use as it made rolling up and carrying to the beach harder. I understand removing them just makes more flapping noise. The sheer size might be an issue for smaller riders and Gong now make and offer newer models. just bought an F-one 6m, insanely light but have yet to pump up and try.

To transport I leave the battens in slightly deflate the strut locking off the valve, fold in half and roll up.
Then slide my 5m Gong into a 6ft 3in short board bag.
Set up is then quick but do not forget to open valve to strut when pumping up otherwise it will be floppy .

Just used the 5m Ozone Wasp. Very impressed, heaps of grunt to get up, easy to go upwind as I could lean against the power and angle the foil. Just felt right. Bit bigger when riding a wave with it flagged out but not unmanageable. New go to wing

Had my first go on the Ozone Wasp 6m in 12-18kts using the Starboard Ocean 2000 front wing. Wind were about 12kts initially and thus lots of pumping to get on foil. I had to be more careful not to catch the wing tip while pumping which I did a few times. Lots of power in the 6m and easy to handle while up and foiling. When Winds ramped up to 18 kts wing was lit but still in full control. Definitely a great addition to the 4m Ozone Wasp as now I can get out in lighter winds.

This is a recommended wing size vs wind strength chart from f one. After using both a 5 and 3.5, I find you can stretch the top and bottom ends out a bit depending on foil size and technique, but it's a good guide. Would imagine other brands would be very similar.
5kts with a 6m maybe?

I just paid for the Gong Superpower 6m. Preorder, prob 6 weeks away, but awesome price...just over $900 AUD landed.

I like the idea of the low aspect shape for low end grunt, get me through the potholes on low wind and offshore days.

Currently have a 4m wing ,which is fine most of the time ,but would liked a bigger one for lighter days .Just wondering what the 6m wings are like . Do they feel big and cumbersome . Better getting a 5m ,or is that to close in size to the 4m

I am 105kg and was out in some seriously light wind (10 knots) today with a big front wing (Armstrong 2400) on 5m Wasp. The 6 would feel big. Demo a 5 if you can.

Was out on the 6m Ozone Wasp yesterday in 12-16kts yesterday, using the Starboard 2000. The only time I really notice how big the wing is when not foiling and underpowered and pumping wing to get on foil, only to catch a wing tip. Only second time using so getting used to the larger size and refining my pumping technique . When up and foiling the wing is very balanced and easy to handle and doesn't feel crazy big. Finding that using the 5th handle is more comfortable when going upwind, but switching to the 4th handle I'm around 70kg.

wow, that's like $600 off on other brands, hows the quality of the gong.
would be good for flat off shore days but if its windy I don't have the windy skill to suit

Which ones are $1550?
Check all the customs fees and gst etc. I got stung bringing a sup in once. Pray you do not have a warranty issue. IMHO it is a good idea to pay a bit more and support your local shop that has good after sales support.

I think most wing retail around$1200 to $1400 depending on size.

If people chase around through they can probably only pay around 1000 or just over and buy something in Australia already.

We are clearing out our wingrider wings from Takuma for about $1000 each so deals are already out there and you don't have to wait 6 weeks.

Aside from price, I went with that particular wing because I think the low aspect shape is a good concept for light wind. I'm looking for grunt and hopefully I was sus on the Gong in the beginning and the original and Plus really weren't appealing to me but Gong has moved very quickly and developed some designs that are quite different to the market atm.

Why didn't I buy another brand locally? I have and do, I got my WASP locally..but I couldn't get what I want here.
As for warranty, i can only go from other people's experiences but they seem to conduct themselves well. I'll have to wait and see I guess.

Some other factors

Takuma....no 6m...And the I wouldn't go there after a friend's issue with his LOL foil.

Duo only goes to 5m. Dunno about the new year lineup, but that's how it is now.

Naish. One size.

F-One and Ozone are around the $1450-1500 mark for 6m models.

F-One is the most beautiful object I've ever seen waft on a breeze, but holy crap it is lightly built....here for a good time, not a long time sort of thing.

BTW, Import duties apply above a declared value of $1000aud.

Yeah pretty fair enough, gezz didnt realize the bigger wings were getting so expensive. When the wind wings came out I told myself I would not get involved in selling these as I just wanted nothing to do with the kite and inflatable side of things after my 13 or so years of kiting, I ended up buying a few but have decided for us as ONE we would rather just focus on the hard board side of things. I will keep one to play with myself and just to have in the quivver(still have not found time to do it more than twice)but already can see the writing on the wall for the selling side.

Hope the Gong and cheaper wings work out and strange why the bigger brands are so slow to catch up with these things.

On the Takuma side I fully agree they have a great foil as in the wing is one of the best on the market but some of the quality is just so average. They do warranty everything that does go wrong so on that side I give a big thumbs up but just a shame to have those kind of issues. I still use my Lol wings everyday but also have a new GF on the way so let's see how that compares after a few weeks. Sorry got a bit side tracked!! Haha

You know how it goes..it'll be awesome for a 6m for a week before I get mine, then 25-30kts every day after I pull it out of the box haha.

I've been out on the river mostly lately, and it has pretty regularly gone from just right to not enough late in the day so I'm hoping to have fun in that stuff.

Paul, as you seem to do a lot of intensive and extensive R&D yourself and your riders at ONE and come up with innovative designs quickly, you can understand how smaller brands, but with the owners and designers being always on the water testing things, are quicker to put quality products on the market and make them evolve than brands owned by big shareholders-driven conglomerates...

Yeah R&D is a crazy thing and when it comes to hard boards the brand's doing yearly turn arounds are tripping. We do a crazy amount of R&D to the point that i stuggle to see us ever making money with the amount we spend and we are lucky if we can really make solid improvements over 18 months to 2 years when you build in production time lines and for us no improvement means no new model.

I guess with inflatable stuff this might be different but the speeds that some have come out makes me think that testing might be at a minimum while others have been caught with there pants down. Anything Inflatable we have chosen to stay away from this goes for inflatable SUPs and these wings as I just do not have the same conference in these kinds of products and unless I could do it at the same level as someone like RED then what's the point. I know it's maybe not the best business model as I am sure there was money to he made but money for us is a fair way down the list of important things.

Right now if I had to buy a wing I think I would buy a Ozone just because I want to be like Kai!!????

Each to his own but don't quiet understand the resistance to the wing ding Jacko as there are now ton of wing foil specific hard boards coming out . Fanatic are about to drop a whole new Sky Wing prone range . 4-8 x 55L , 5-0 x 75L , 5-4 x 95L. F-One & a few others are following suit . Sup wing specific boards from all brands are all coming out as well . Foil wing designers are now tuning the front and rear wing for better reaching and easier launch and lower stall speed on the wing foil. You make one of the best DW paddle boards. Just don't understand your resistance to the wing boards . I reckon you could make a cracker

No resistance to the board side(kind off) just not getting involved in making inflatable toys as that side is not really our thing.

I have winged a few times and on this wing specific boards I am still really to get my head around it. My board that I use for DW and also the same board i use in the waves also seemed to work very well with the wing, yeah sure I could make myself a 50L little narrow board that I can't stand on and have to drift out on my knees and then is really only good for one thing but just struggling to see how this is a good thing.
Right now sounds like a bunch of marketing hype. Most crew I see struggle to get going on a board that is a decent size for them so how are these guys going to go when they are talked in to a board that they will sink on and really start to struggle on. Might be ok in the flat for some but let's see how most go once they hit the ocean.
You can't watch what Kai and that F-one kid are doing as they are super gifted and can stand on anything.

Maybe I am way off and people do want to drop $2000 On a board just for winging? Maybe the skill level will get higher and the market will see the need for this but right now it's is a massive sport in a tiny bubble and this may confuse some brands.

By the way why would you say I have a resistance to winging? Never talked to you personally about the sport and in fact have said it has a very important place in the sport for certain areas, maybe right at the start I was on the fence and for myself I don't really see much use for a wing but as a way to learn to foil better it is a great way and for those who want to get into DW it is a great entry into it and I see some racing coming through as well so definitely not negitve on it and definitely no negitve talk in my posts above about it.
Next you will say I am negitve on prone foiling because I don't prone foil at the alley everyday in between the crowded surfers!! Just because you don't see me do something does not mean I am against it and in many cases I just do it away from the crowds and where people are watching as I am not always into big crowds unless I am pushed for time or feeling lazy.

Hope that clears things up.

Jacko : You constantly refer to the Wing as an inflatable toy & writing it off and novelty, that's what I based my comments on.

I' m having fun on my wing ding. With one fickle crowded accessible foil wave in Perth and not the skills to downwing foil they are fun.

I ordered the 6m Gong Dong, being only 75kg I really would love to get some light winds and maybe offshore foiling.
