Hello all;
I'm looking at supplement my aging boat netbook with an Android tablet to run Open CPN and the usual other general stuff. I plan to buy a used one so that I won't cry too hard when I inevitably do something bad to it on board.
Reasonable graphics, including good brightness, Bluetooth for music and a micro-SD slot seem like desirable starting points.
Suggestions welcome.
Cheers, Graeme
I have used this for a year and a half.
Cheap and no problems.https://www.banggood.com/10_1-Inch-A7-Quad-Core-1_3GHz-1G-RAM-16G-Android-6_0-OS-Dual-3G-Calling-Tablet-p-1312307.html?rmmds=search&ID=224

My Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet works fine with MemoryMap for years, in a waterproof bag.
I would not buy any second hand rubbish unless it is from an impeccable supplier.
It is not worth - imo - to try to save a few quids where one's safety is concerned as l navigate with the tablet as my primary navigation tool.
Second hand is likely to have poor battery life. Daylight viewing is also a problem as high brightness chews up the battery even faster.
Maybe better to pick up a used laptop that you can buy a new battery for.
Which nav app is best for the Samsung?
I don't think you can go past Navionics
I also have Memory Maps, OpenCPN & a few others but Navionics hasn't let me down .................yet!!
I agree with others samsung galaxy 10.1 there cheap enough new and i use navionics
I would be stuffed without it
although Samsung is a good brand, not every one of its tablets are created equally. Had the Navionics on the 8" A8 and it struggled running the app. So I would stay away from the A series Samsung for these purposes.
As for Navionics it is not free. But Navionics are the heart of many chart plotters. I do not know how much would you want to trust your life to a free and open source app like OpenCPN, but I would not take the chance.
Well, this last post does not reflect my woes about navionics and all vector charts or ENCs.
The paper chart - which we must carry in NSW by law - is a raster chart and it's electronic versions RNC's like Jeppesen's C-Map or MemoryMap are all based on the paper charts or Admiralty Charts (AHO) as we used to call them even if they are electronic versions of the same. They are raster charts or RNC's.
Navionics might be good enough for the young computer bashing generation but for old chaps like me the paper chart or it's electronic equivalent is the only one l could trust.
My conviction is, that navionics and other ENC's or vector charts - unless released by the Admiralty (AHO) - are glorified toys with way too many fancy bits to them able to induce a not so prudent, experienced user or navigator to make a mistake.
If nothing else, the zooming function could hide details from users unless they zoom in to a certain level, some details do not appear at lower zoom levels not likely on raster charts or RNCs.
I am with you sir g but I am fairly sure C-Map uses vector charts.
Even way out of date paper charts are reliable to use. Land masses do not move very often. As long as you get the latest information on lights and markers and do not throw caution to the wind it is hard to go wrong.
I agree with sirgalivant re. tablets. You will pay a bit more for new but have warranty and peace of mind. I run both Memory-Map and Navionics on my Samsung and it does the job well. Some cheaper tablets don't have the battery life of the better brand names. I get roughly 10 hrs use out of mine but also keep it charged while in use.
In relation to Memory-Map vs Navionics. I have used Memory-Map for about 15 yrs now and it is a great product but unlike Navionics, when you zoom in Memory-Map you only get an enlarged picture where in Navionics you get much more detail when you zoom in. Sirgallivant is correct about zooming in Navionics in that if you are zoomed OUT in Navionics you loose to much information but if your coastal sailing you wouldn't be zoomed out anyway. The zoomed IN detail in Navionics is amazing and it's a great tool for coastal and ocean sailors alike. Another good thing in Navionics is that you can update your charts via wifi as often as you like.
I use both, Memory-Map for when I want a good old fashioned chart view while I use Navionics for everyday use.
Another good thing with Memory-Map is that it is a great mapping tool in other ways. We also do a lot of 4wd'ing and Memory-Map has every bit of Australia (and most other countries) covered in very great detail.
It appears Memory Map charts for Australia are no longer available for sale or supported. Anyone have advice if the charts can be sourced?
I use a Samsung TAB A with Navionics. Not problems. Love it.
huh, same tab the A7 did not work out for me, was too sluggish for my liking.

Still in business, received email from Memory map today alls good
You may have heard a rumor or read on the web that Memory-Map has "suspended services". Please rest assured this is not true.
The situation is, we have discontinued working with a certain re-seller, who is now putting out a false message on the Australian website. There are a few maps that we have discontinued selling, and some others that are no longer available for download. However, the Memory-Map online activation services and most maps of Australia are not affected by the change.
We have recently released new edition maps for NSW, QLD and TAS, as well as a new edition of the Hema 4WD Maps. We are working on replacements for other maps that may be affected. If you are having problems accessing your purchased maps or software, please contact us via our global support site https://memory-map.com/Support.html. You may be eligible for a free update.
The bottom line is Memory-map is fully committed to the Australia/NZ market and we are looking after our customers in the region.

Hi dialdan,
I also have the same email that apparently has been sent by Memory-Map.
As a result I went to their Oz web site.
There is a banner on their home page, and every page you can access saying the service is suspended indefinitely.
Can't log into my account, can't download anything, can't get into License Managment to register it on my new laptop.
In short, at the moment it isn't working.
I'm not sure whether this is just the marine chart section or whether it covers the land maps and aeronautical side as well. Either way it is no good to me at the moment.

I never ever dealt with the Aussie site.
Bought the prog. on the us site, updated too. No worries ever!
