Another gift. Topsides need stripping off and the alloy left bare.

not to mention putting the motor in the bow. never seen this before. Good access though.

Interesting. Does this mean having a ten foot long drive shaft that runs through the middle of the boat? Under the mast step and over the keel bolts.

^ Absolutely. It shows the designer knows what he is about with weight distribution, stability and sailing performance.

The shaft would be about 5 foot long and if this boat has a bolt on keel the bolts would be staggered anyway. My mates aluminium Cole 42 has an aluminium keel welded on and filled with lead. As an aside yesterday he found a corroded AA battery in the bilge but the surrounding aluminium was perfect. Over the years he has found lead sinkers and mild steel nuts etc in the bilge but the unpainted alloy is still in perfect condition.

Never heard of them but a bit of digging found these links for the larger 39 model; good write up on it at first link.

www.mysailing.com.au/news/blue-lady-a-challenger-39

and

phuket.boatshed.com/challenger_yachts_australia_39_mk11-boat-135434.html

So looks like Nick Louis started out building in Goolwa and then moved to Langkawi. The 39 seems like the more built model - with different cabin types normal and pilot house.

Hi Rob,
Thanks for looking that up for me. I was just interested but am not a buyer at this time.

Boxing Day will be different for many of us this year.
I will miss the excitement of the CYCA but many good memories there.
I am planning to sail with friends, who I have not been out with for years. How good is that.
I wish you a happy xmas and hope you get some sailing in also.
Cheers,
John

Thanks John. Yes a real shame about the race cancellation. Wind forecast for the next 7 days looks good. All the very best for the festive season. regards Rob

I guess sitting on the top sides with only a footwell for a cockpit wouldn't make you feel to secure particularly in the absence of any kind of hard dodger not to mention the "W" word.

Different strokes for different folks! The fact that it's wood and does not have any dodger is what appeals to me. The downside is the sail-drive and the poor headroom over the galley.
This is how my mate got around the poor headroom in his alloy Cole 42. It had the exact same profile.

Aluminium boats really appeal to me and I think it's a shame that they never really took off but I'm afraid I don't know enough about them to be confident buying an older one.

This boat was on C arm at the CYCA for many years but never used. The story goes the owner went to Europe to live but continued to pay his berthing fees. There were numerous private attempts to contact him without success in the hope of buying it. Eventually someone paid $1000 for it. They put a lot of time, money and effort into it, but got the racing results.

Aluminium boats do really take off. Look at the number of Doug Peterson designs built in alloy.

The major drawback with alloy hulls is the limitations on effective antifouling that can be applied to them.

Hopefully you'd never sit on the topsides of any boat. That's what decks and cockpits are for. "Topsides on a boat... is that part of the hull between the waterline and the deck." Also that configuration has its benefits on a racing oriented boat.

Hey Saw a nice little Davidson down at Gunyah tonight! Admired that little boat nice one!

Did you get its name?

Something like Spindrift! What happened to your Swanson, you didn't have that for long.

I had a lot of joy out of my Swanson and can't remember a difficult moment. When Spindrift came up I wanted to devote my time to its, so I decided to sell Audacious. I showed it to two or three genuine buyers and then someone paid me the asking price.
In January it will be heading up to northern NSW and then cruising in the Whitsundays.

A random search for something else showed up the a previous owner of Spindrift is also a previous owner of Defiance who cruised it to Perth
Bit of trivia for the week!

Peter Lowe was an associate of Peter Cole as per here - Peter Lowe probably the most unsung Aust yacht designer.

I had a chat with the owner a few weeks ago. She was moored about 150metres from Ricochet. The 2 pot paint was applied only a couple of days before and is a superb job. The Jack Russel onboard at the time was not the one in his videos! The electronic fit-out is a bit over the top. The windows are checker plate aluminium!

So I went to look at a couple of Benateaus yesterday having previously avoided considering them due to them being generally less robust than 70s or 80s Australian yachts and having bolt on cast iron keels, flattish un sea friendly hull areas and of course also because they are pricey.
These were older 80s boats one 34.5 ft and the other 37.5.

The family resemblance was evident as they both had similar construction (despite one being of rather porky appearance and the other being from their better looking 'first' series) but were very hard to inspect due to there being internal liners even below the bunks and in the cupboards. They also had awful foam backed vinyl liners in places which were all drooping above the berths (even cupboards) but which had been left in place by the owners so I couldn't rip them off to inspect the structural elements behind. They hide leaks and other things better than the permeable carpet which might be stuck to the hull on an Australian boat in similar locations. Absolutely nowhere to view the fastenings for through deck fittings or hull/deck join or any rust drip lines.
They both would have been pretty flash as new boats because there was heaps of curved and other plexiglass to let in light and lots of light coloured timber surfaces where on 1980's Australian boats you might see the plain white gel coat of the internal liner with solid timber only on the edges. After 35 years the white gel coat looks a hell of a lot better as it hasn't deteriorated like timber veneer. ALL the fancy plexi glass windows some of convoluted impossible to replace shapes were badly crazed and some cracked.
I guess the moral is that all the fancy bits tend to fall apart quicker and make the boat look more tatty.

Give me Oz please!

The drooping interiors are a feature of these boats and also other boats of that age.
Contact adhesive doesn't last for ever. Especially when exposed to a deck that is heated by the tropical sun day after day.
What I am saying is, that is natural wear and tear and could be a very good case for negotiation.

You might not like the shape of these boats much, but I think you would enjoy the space and speed.

Just for a different take on the market...A friend that specialises in mortgage defaults is panicking about the number of customers that are headed for default on their mortgage when Jobkeeper expires in March. Letters are going out everywhere asking people to sell property now whilst the market is buoyant as their financial position in March is, in his words ' horrible'. And amazingly, there is little take-up on the advice, the majority of responses all appear to be based on a thought process of "its not March yet".
Methinks there will be a buyers market for all sorts of things post March if gov relief isn't extended.
I hope the market is proven wrong, I hate seeing people lose their homes or firesaling possessions. Even if they are not the smartest tool in the shed.

I'm fairly sure the bulk of the buyers are cashed up retirees or almost retired people. We are seeing the people who are not snapping up the caravans or classic cars.

Wondering if you got a shot of his bow roller and integrated chain ratchet ?
