HI, I am planning an instrument upgrade.
Is there anyone in the Sydney area you would recommend to do the job?

Hello John

Seeing as no responses to you as yet..............I respond as below hopefully not lecturing or hectoring or worse.............

But before the below text see at this link prior comms on wind insts which you would be aware of - I posted some comments as did you..........

www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Sailing/General/Garmin-GNX-Wireless-Wind-Pack---any-good-?page=1#25

So as regards your post above I asked our on board "spark" who responded - abridged version as below trust it might be of use. Lightning fried one of our Raymarine hull transmitters

"

I spoke to these guys during my research. They were also the ones who sold me the reconditioned Raymarine Hull Transmitter when the previous one got fried by the apparent lightning strike.

www.aquatronics.com.au/

You could also suggest he look at the Yacht Devices website (I had email correspondence with one of their tech guys, who was also very helpful: www.yachtd.com/).

Tell him to consider getting data to tablets/PCs rather than being locked in to proprietary display units.

I would also suggest he talk to the blokes at 2dogsmarine

2dogsmarine.com.au/products/nmea-2000-wi-fi-gateway-ydwg-02r?_pos=1&_sid=8e4f98b30&_ss=r $379

- suggest he do some research on what he wants first, so he knows what he is talking about when he approaches these guys. The response to my initial email query to 2dogs was incorrect, until I queried it and he came back and confirmed my analysis. He was very helpful to talk to after that!

"

It is realised that 2dogsmarine are at Airlie Beach - but they probably are working with companies in Sydney who they can recommend.........

These 2 companies look capable but we haven't had experience with them

hydrosparkx.com.au/

regards Rob

Digital Yacht iKommunicate NMEA 0183/2000 GatewayDigital Yacht iKommunicate NMEA 0183/2000 Gateway is the world's first NMEA to Signal K gateway.
It connects to your boat's NMEA network and converts traditional NMEA data into the new Signal K format, a new open data format for boats.Signal K is the 'next generation' of marine Navigation data exchange - a 'web ready' interfacing standard for the latest generation of HTML5 websites and apps.
Once your NMEA data is converted into Signal K, you can Log engine data such as fuel flow, temperature and pressure, then analyse for any trends that indicate an engine service requirement.iKommunicate is equipped with a NMEA 2000 connection, dual NMEA 0183ports and an RJ45 LAN interface.
It has a built-in webserver and Ethernet Portfor easy connection to a WiFi router, so nav data can be shared across multiple devices ie. tablets, PCs, smartphones and MFDs.
This means that any mobile device connected to the network can display the Signal K data in its browser or compatible app, like NMEA Remote or Navionics.
iKommunicate can be self-powered from the NMEA 2000 network or connected to a 12/24v supply if only NMEA 0183 data is utilised. It is designed to connect to a 3rd party on-board router which will provide WiFi access and a gateway to the internet if required. This could be via 3G/4G, Wi-Fi or satellite. iKommunicate also comes pre-installed with two Signal K Web Apps - iKompass and Instrument Panel - so that you can immediately start displaying NMEA data from your network.Features:NMEA2000 Certified Gateway with Integral NMEA2000 drop cableEasy to install Black Box solutionEasy setup with built-in Web InterfaceVoltage: 12/24v DC1 x Atmel processor (120MHz) - converts the NMEA data in to Signal KJSON data3 x Opto Isolated NMEA0183 Inputs and 2 x Differential NMEA0183 Outputs1 x RJ45 Ethernet (10/100Mb) network connection1 x Internal 8GB micro SD Card for storing any new Signal K pages, apps or files as they become availablePre-installed with two Signal K Web Apps - iKompass and Instrument PanelSupports Signal K Version 1 Http REST API and Delta Messages via Web socketsProvides wireless NMEA over TCP and UDP protocolsNetwork Discovery via Bonjour (mDNS) and Windows SDDPCompatible with apps such as Navionics

Hi BB, well that turned into a bit of a rabbit hole! thanks I think

It's interesting though with the open source Signal K capabilities, I'll definitely keep an eye on this. The Signal K website lists this page with links to various hardware and software solutions: signalk.org/solutions.html

As well as the iKommunicate device, that page list includes another device from vYachyt: vyacht.net/opencart/n2k-wifi

It's not as expensive + it has a wifi module built in, unlike the iKommunicate which needs a separate wifi module added. Have you checked it out, what do you think?

I've been running Signal K for a number of years on my Pi4 in association with OpenPlotter which is mentioned on the Signal K page in 2bish's first link.

The "Instrument Panel" app is handy for showing a lot of info - below is a pic of my Instrument Panel. See that I'm only using 16 out of 74 available as circled in yellow at the bottom. The first 3 instruments are not showing any info because I am not on the boat & don't have my chartplotter or wind inst (NMEA2000) turned on.

The other pic is some of the info available on my Signal K - where the Instrument Panel, & everything else, gets its info.

All very interesting stuff!!
