G'day

Just thought I'd share my experience with the Woo 3.0 in terms of reliability. Mine failed at 14 months (hairline crack in case / corroded terminals). Not sure how the case cracked as it's never been dropped and it's hard to imagine my lowly jumps are to blame. I'm guessing the woo doesn't like salt water.
I have to confess there were a few occasions when I left the device in the mount after a session (which they don't advise). The plastic mount doesn't appear to be completely watertight, though it has stuck well to my board.

Being out of warranty (1 year) woo sports offered a replacement at half price and advised that the device needs to be removed, washed in freshwater and dried after every session.

Anyways when it worked it did seem quite consistent and the measured heights were mostly believable. The syncing of real time heights to my watch was pretty flaky but quite useful when it did work.

I have one for about a year now, and I wash/dry it when I rinse my board after the session and that avoid having contacts corroding.
There is definitely a bit of water coming into the mount during a session.

I think mine is skitzing out has been doing weird things for the last couple of months. Might have to return it before warranty runs out!

Not a lot of choice now though. PIQ just closed down for good. Your only other option is a mobile phone. Is a Woo cheaper than a new phone every year?

I agree. I know it's inconvenient, but a water proof case that goes around your arm, cheap android phone running Woo app, and you're good to go. You see everything directly on your phone and get GPS recordings as well. And if you're desperate for a watch - a 2nd hand Garmin with WearOS.

Surfr is a phone-only option. Apparently works well in a case under your wetsuit too

Kamikaze
We are thinking of ditching the Woo devices for our big air event in November in favour of the surfer-r app.
Straight away I went fark that I'm not putting my new phone through that and risk losing it.

If your Woo stops charging, scratch the connection points with a key or a coin and it will charge again, I have to do it 2-3 times pr year

I agree. Talk to Flo there. They are a great team working seriously for a proper system that actually works and it's accurate! I've asked if they could make a case that is not plastic moulded, but it seems there isn't a tough enough case that can take the punishment of a 15m board falling for example. Fair enough. But yeah, putting the phone in a waterproof Fre case and inside an arm band, could work

Here is the Instagram for Surfr.
They were a critical part of the Tarifa Full Power Big Air Kite League.
The app can be used in two modes. Board mount or wetsuit mode. Wetsuit mode allows for a soft waterproof case to be slipped into/under your wetsuit.
Plenty of great options.... Flo at Surfr is a great guy easy to get in touch with, and super commited to the kite surfing world.
We are using it for the Brissie Big Air event in November. We can live stream in real-time rider jumps to a big screen for the crowd.
