Hi I'm wondering peoples opinions reviews on the various North Nugget surf boards over the years.
I'm currently riding the 2015 5ft 2 love this board as a light wind small to medium waves, but thinking if I could find a duotone 2019 5ft 3 would it be a big improvement, but are discontinued now. The newer one has 2 deeper double concaves, moon tail and rear rails are a lot sharper square. I would imagine it would grip better and hold its edge better in stronger winds than t h e 2015 model.
Nice to hear any feedback from people that have used several models. Thanks
Have tried number of Nuggets over the years to see if there performance has improved But as you stated They are good to learn on and light conditions/small waves But it will get to a stage where it will slow your progression Yes to progress there are better models in Durotone Example Pro whip Sizing depends on your weight and height Also if in Melbourne Welcome to try Smook Shredder ( cut off nose board) which is designed for better performance in waves And made in Aus Melbourne

I have used the original shape and the 5'2 TT , I think it's 2015, up until a year or so ago when I started foiling.. great boards for light wind and won't get rid of them, I was surprised at the difference in performance of the lighter built version when I rode a mates. Lighter was way better. Using Scarfini fx1 fins also made a big improvement The nugget was always a gap filler for our light wind but a game changer for us.. Trouble was that it struggled in It's ability to engage the wave. Cant comment too much on later model boards but I am guessing there is not a huge difference .....so I bought 5'5 Duotone pro fish to early this year based on its light wind ability and general design over the classic surfboard shapes which I always have found wind hungry up here. ( I'm 85 kgs)
Its a great board and it fills that gap well for me . Up to higher 20s kts it is very controllable , cranks upwind , engages the face , floats off mush nicely , is weirdly great fun to ride when you dial it in. Very pleased with this board.
cheers
Used to. have the 2016 5"3 nugget which worked well in light winds. Sold it after I got into foiling, light wind strapless is a bit boring with a high volume board !
I have the 2019 Duotone Nugget 5ft 4in... I have to say I ride with a 10 meter North Carve and I sail everything from 12 knots to 20 knots. It a real fun board to ride. It really ticks people off when you are planing in light winds with a 10 Meter. I used to ride with a 15 meter but there is no real difference to that and the 10 meter... If its lighter than that I take out a SUP or a SUP and Sail.... or go for a surf...
The Nugget has been discontinued and its a shame as it fills a real neat hole for me... above 18 knots a change to the Wam and I now have North Charge (Now this is a sick board)... I really only need a 10 & 7 meter kites now and just change boards. I really don't want to get into foiling rather ride a bike.

How do you know you'd prefer ride a bike if you haven't tried?
I reckon the reason the nugget has been discontinued is because riding this type boards means mowing the loan trying to stay upwind while with a foil you can get a taste of speed, incredible upwind ability, boost, etc... and all of this without changing your kite quiver. Add a ram air to your quiver and you can enjoy sessions on mirror like waters when no one else is out there.
No I am not having a go at foiling... Just more money and more stuff.... That's what I mean I would rather ride a bike... great road and mountain biking in Gippsland... I have had a go of foiling and it is fun much like riding powder on a snowboard.... Again I would rather ride powder on a snowboard.... If you have been to Canada or Japan and had chest deep fresh powder there is nothing like it anywhere...
Have had a few nuggets over the years, the more recent ones (eg. 2017) def better. The last model (2019 yellow/blue duotone) was quite good even in shoulder high waves seemed to hold better even if was stupidly wide, maybe the concave, wide set quads helped. Older ones seemed to work better with straps newer ones better without.
I have demoed a fish and they are great little boards and def my next board but still retailing for $1100 if you can find one, my local shop won't even let go of their demo stock.
Hard to find good s/h nuggets peeps tend to hang on to them.

Just shifted from a nugget to fish. Sadly due to covid I haven't had it out yet.
I have 2018 5.3 Nugget (the only board I've ridden for the last 2.5 years) and I love it in low wind and sloppy waves. However it does become a bit of a handleful in multidirectional chop. I have used it in waves up to 2m and it wasn't bad nor great, just had be right on the tail and keep the speed down.
I have ordered a 5.5 Duotone Pro Fish, but they are hard to come by.

You mean less stuff I have three kites now, instead of 6. It's cheaper and less time consuming than snowboarding and I can do it year round.
I still have a hankering for a Slayer v1 or 2...probably have to get one from a shaper though...
Kamikuza, Yep you are right less stuff. Now will eat my own words, I have tried my mates Fanatic SUP and Foil with a Duotone Wing. I have to say it is insane fun thing to do. Wing Dinging is a new thing but it combines a lot of experiences I really like. I will have to save up for some of this gear as a fun low wind alternative especially pumping on downwind waves its pretty cool.

I had wondered who would perform such a sacrilegious act on a Nugget (the greatest big man board ever invented!!)

Hey BT & Warick just picked up a 2016 Nugget 4'11"
still wondering whether to do the sacrilegious retro foil track on it.
Have a forced lay off with a left knee replacement on the 21st September.
Will have plenty of time being a kite bitch.
Why would anyone buy a nugget?
Just go to your local surfboard shaper and tell them what you want (2 x 6oz deck glassed with epoxy resin) and you will end up with something better.
Fair enough for regular kiting the kite companies know what they're doing, but if just strapless cruising in light wind, no decent jumps, I would go the bespoke locally produced option over the sweatshop production line.
