I'm an Alaska based kiter putting together a once in a lifetime trip to Antarctica with kiteboarding as the focus. It's always expensive to get there, but wow what a place to kite. Please don't hesitate to drop me a note if you have questions. www.TroyHenkels.com

Not sure if you're allowed to? The Antarctic Treaty of 1959 might foil your plans.
But if you do, make sure you boardslide a grey whale, and pull off a beak stall on an Emperor penguin.
I've spent a lot of time in Antarctica and have even kited there. The Antarctic Treaty does not affect this expedition.

I'm sure an energy mining company will sponsor you to upgrade their green credentials for exploration.
Stay in your own hemisphere ****tard and recycle some plastic bags, that will do more good for the planet.

Seems a long way to go for the same conditions as you can get locally...?
I've been scouting out doing a kiteski/x-country trip loosely following trans-alaska pipeline coast to coast... was going to do it last year while family was in Canada but y'know, global pandemic and all...
I see you were mates with Dixie - vale, amazing guy.
Sounds awesome. Keep is posted with pics and vids.
PS is that a 2008 ozone instinct kite your flying???? If so that is old AF. Assuming there's death involves if the kite fails and you have to do a big swim. Maybe look at upgrading to new gear that has less chance of failure.

This will not be a sponsored trip. It's just an amazing place to experience in it's own right let alone kite.............I've had the opportunity and feel like it would be great to offer others the same experience. Wow, sorry you are so upset about it.
Do you use icebergs as kickers and ramps?
Yes, I've done that and it works. Super fun!

It's actually a 2007 Ozone instinct...which is the year I did that expedition that those photos are from. Currently on 2020 Ozone kites.

Alaska conditions are quite different than Antarctica. And Antarctica is amazing to experience in it's own right. I've been looking for a partner for an Alaska crossing. Along the pipeline, or rather North to South would be difficult I think...........but across the north slope is very doable. Dixie and I were planning east to West...........the border to Wales. Yep, he was an amazing guy......sad deal.
Hey , my smaller other kite is a 2009 9mtr Ozone instinct sports?...which I use 6 times a summer , my best kite ever.
Remember the pink boob guy who turned out to be a complete fraud? Rorted the charity funds he raised whole thing was a ego stroke so bad that the charitys refused to even work with him ever again. Well he told half a dozen kite instructor/guides etc etc they got the job as support only for them to get to hobart to do the antartica training realising there was 6 instead of 2 and the training itself was going to cost them 15k a pop and that was before even getting aboard. So many scammy things like this happen.
Now...
A close frien did THE CHEAP option of going to antartica the other year that was on ukrainian boat and crew and they left from south america and evem that was 30k a pop ? Lots of people cheap cheap option to actually go to south pole was like? 130 k?? From very vague memory.
Anyways... 15k... very very small group punters of 6?!? So your saying... whole operation only 90k$?!?! Something stinks to high heaven
So much i made an account
Good luck everyone. I stayed gone for as long as i could but something about this was just too wrong to not jump in.
Now... Troy....rather then be called a bunch of words that us aussies have finely developed from years of living under stones and between iron bars you just give us YOUR MOST HONEST estimate of what to expect a TOTAL cost would be.
If you can organise and expedition surely you can chuck in some rough calvulations of flights from aus to argentina and a weeeks accomodation or 2 if weathers **** or 3 ??? Just give us a ballll park figure pre covid prices are fine.
Im all ears

One of the few last untouched places on earth you want to turn into a kitesurfing adventure destination

So what's the problem with that Peahi? If these guys want to fork out lotsa $$$ for the adventure of a lifetime, I'd say "go for it!" I'm sure Antarctica won't be harmed by having a few kiters come for a short visit.

wtf you talking about. plenty of sub 60ft yacht charters sub-$30k/week. if you can't work out how to fly to Ushuaia and book accommodation i wouldn't want to be on a boat with you.
but fwiw, $200/night for ok accommodation, and pre-covid i was flying to BA for $4500 ex Perth return business class with Qatar. Add about $250 each way for BA-USH.
You can do a full crossing for $70k USD with ALE, reckon your mate got ripped off.

Probably not, but promoting / publicizing it etc seems wrong. I don't really understand the attraction of kiting in freezing conditions and paying that money other than bragging rights? Bit like climbing Mt Everest, a few adventurers did it originally it now there's thousands of heroes wanting to do it and look what a mess that has become.
Sounds awesome. Keep is posted with pics and vids.

I took a 2008 Ozone Instinct 7m to central Ontario, Canada, and tried to fly it in a blizzard and the valves were too frozen in a misshaped way to seal properly. It was the weirdest thing..the next day was a bit less cold and it was perfectly fine. I tried a few things to warm them up but no luck. It was about -20 degrees I think..

The boat costs what it costs....it's 16k a person. If this trip was happening this year..........flight prices currently from Sydney to Santiago are $2500 to $3000 USD. Santiago to Ushuaia it's $400 USD. Hotels in Ushuaia is $60 to $100 a night. So figuring 7 nights = $700. Add up the high numbers on all of this.......$20,100 usd = 27,287 Aussie dollars. That's today prices and flights booked a few months out. Yep, it isn't cheap....getting to Antarctica never is. Catch a cruise ship for a 14 day trip(Linbald/Natl. Geo).......similar price....15k. And then you are on a cruise ship. The upside to my trip is.....it's a sailboat with only 6 guests. We aren't herding lots of tourists around. We can go to places the big boats can't. And our aim is to experience Antarctica and kite whenever the wind blows. I've done it on a private expedition and it was an unreal experience. I really thought it would be neat to go back againwith kiting as the focus. It's an other worldly experience. Yes it's an expensive, once in a lifetime opportunity to a place most people will never get to. Is it a scam.........nope. I just want to share the experience I had there and this is the only way I know how to make that happen.

Nah, I also don't really understand the attraction of kiting among icebergs, nor climbing on Mt Everest. but that doesn't mean that we should stop others from seeking adventure in these wild places. With the proviso of course that they must leave the place as pristine as they found it (or better) and of course they can't expect outside assistance in the event of trouble.
And isn't this type of query (seeking like-minded nutters) just the type of thing these forums are for?
Ah some harsh judgements going on here. The very spirit of adventure that promotes this adventure is the very same spirit that allows us to type words/speak to each from all over the globe, plus all the other advances we have made.
Id offer another perspective, 6 individuals experiencing first hand the natural beauty of the place and providing photos/videos may actually promote a further appreciation of the place and may even instill some to take action in the name of trying to keep it as it is
depends on how you look at it .
go freeze ya balls of lads, tip my hat to you
I still cant post photos so youll have to look at my profile photo for proof.
