Hi all,

I have the opportunity to get a foil at a reasonable price but I have two options;
A) Naish hover 160 and thrust foil with 90cm mast
B) RRD Dolphin board and
RRD foil with 90cm mast

Which is the best option for an advanced Kiter who had never foiled?

Any advice much appreciated.

What's a reasonable price?

Haven't seen or tried the RRD but the Naish is a pig of a foil.

I haven't tried either but I have seen the Naish and it looked huge, which will make it sluggish. The RRD looks much more the bizo.

It depends on which foil you are referring to? Naish has two surfing foils (large and medium wings), a windsurfing foil and a kitesurfing foil. Yes the surfing foils are slow and sluggish compared to something like a KFA race foil. They have a large surface area and a thick foil profile which which makes them rise early but limits the top end. Personally when i foil now i stay in the river mouth and kite on the large surfing foil. It is more maneuverable and carves at low speed and on waves with ease. Its top end isn't actually that bad either. I've ridden it back to back with a lift foil and its top end was identical! Which blew me away as i thought it would be a pig too. Its my one foil now for surf/SUP and kite foiling.

Initially i was loving the top end speed of the race foils, but as we don't have a racing crew around here i just play around in the surf. Plus i can foil in much lighter wind on the surf foil.

The kiting foil has a much smaller lift profile. I have kited on it and enjoyed it but i didn't have a reference at the time to compare it against so i'm not 100% on where it sits in the big picture.

Cheers,

Ryan

Never tried the RRD but I have the Naish Surf Thrust (the beast) and Hover 155. It is definitely not fast but it is a carving machine and goes in nothing and surfs awesomely. You want to have some weight for their biggest wing (1237cm2).
