Cats verse Guns

Any Cat owner who is in favour of Australia's current Gun Laws needs to take a good look at themselves (as a cat owner)

On a recent 4 day hike through the Conondale National Park I saw about 10 locations where birds had been kill/eaten by ferrel cats. My movements were restricted to the track, so if I saw 10 kills, there must be thousands in the surrounding area.

Cats would have to be one of the most skilled killing machine I have ever seen. It's not only birds but also a lot of smaller rodents that are in their food chain.

Any cat owner who claims that they keep their cat well fed so it doesn't kill, is just kidding themselves. Or saying my cat is kept indoors all the time so it can't kill is another excuse that doesn't hold water. None of these types of excuses worked for responsible gun owners.

At least guns don't kill people, they need a person to assist them.
Guns don't breed where as cats can survive and thrive in our native bush quite well.

Anyone who votes "Green" and has a cat is plainly just a hypocrite
Anyone who is concerned about our environment and has a cat, is a hypocrite.

A cat can breed up to 3 times a year and give birth to an average of 180 kittens. The population growth is staggering over a few years if half the kittens were female and they all produced. Ferrels cats in Australia are not native and they all started as domestic cats.

Guns certainly look the safer option to have as a pet. I don't hate cats, I just see them for what they are. Not like some people who are kidding themselves.

I think you do hate cats.

it also appears you hate people who have them as pets.

Perhaps you should do some more research on cat ownership before you rant again. Maybe do some research on what keeping a cat indoors means as well.

Do you own a car? Car owners are drowning the planet in carbon monoxide. It'll be the death of all life on the planet eventually. Youre just kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

The cat is out of the bag. Regardless your opinion of cat owners there ain't nothing can be done, literally, to eliminate cats from the natural environment.

Australia now has another wild animal which is permanently established in the ecosystem. It is here to stay.

Criticizing cat owners, (of which I am not one), is meaningless. Domestic cats can and do kill wildlife if allowed out of doors but wildlife will be killed by feral cats far more efficiently. In actual fact domestic cats are in all probability also at risk of being killed by feral cats which have developed into a far superior version of the original.

Shaming cat owners into not having cats as pets will not eliminate feral cats.

Live with it.

I saw a feral cat at least the size of a German Shepard eating some road kill .
Domestic cat wouldn't last a min against that .
It was freaking huge & quite a bit scary I was glad I was in the car .
Made me think of the panther sightings you get out western Sydney in the mountains .

Birds of prey take out other birds, often leaving a pile of feathers on the ground where they have eaten. I know cats are formidable hunters, but how do you know it was cats doing the killing,, did you see the cats doing it?

It wasn't my hamster at fault, that's for sure. You sound like yet another cat lover in denial.

PS, I don't own a hamster.

Yes unless you can come up with an eradication plan (probably costing billions ) not worth worrying too much about those in captivity.

It's the New Pangea. Humans have artificially linked all the continents and islands into one "contiguous area". Just doing this will cause a mass extinction on its own. Doubling a land area doesn't allow for double the species.

I believe that genetic science could come up with a solution. My background in fishery management and past interest in fishing had me put many thinking hours, ( and some practical ones), into the problem with invasive fish species such as carp and European Perch.

Whilst at College we did some basic experimentation with genetic interference in order to control the sex of juveniles. Which is quite easy and has been done for decades now.

I believe that it wouldn't be too difficult to produce a sexually dominant strain of carp which produces only sterile young. Problem with that of course is the fact that the f^ckers live for a very very long time so it would be a long term solution. Would cost a fortune as well and it's painfully obvious that there are no funds for that sort of forward thinking.

Of course there is a risk that a genetic solution might migrate back to their country of origin and f^ck up the ecology there. Just as mixing my toasties did in Europe.

I too saw one in the Dandenongs which was huge. I won't say it was as large as a panther but it was probably three times the size of a domestic cat. Pitch black.

It is not the domestic cat that I have an issue with, it is the irresponsible domestic cat owner that gives me the sh1ts.

I regularly trap and dispose of feral cats in my area (probably ten a year), trust me these are NOT someone's pet, they are hissing, spitting killing machines.

I have on one or two occasions trapped a domestic or obvious 'pet'. I gave them a fluorescent pink stripe of non toxic marker ink along their back and released them, the purpose was to let their owners know they 'in the firing line' should they return, I have not trapped them a second time.

Remind me how many people have been killed by cats in Australia?

P.S. I'm disappointed, with that thread title I was expecting a link to an entertaining YouTube video.

This is part of North Sydneys policy on Cats

"A cat can be declared to be a nuisance if it persistently disturbs the peace of the neighbourhood, damages property outside the property at which it is kept, or if it is continually found in wildlife protection areas."
www.northsydney.nsw.gov.au/files/assets/public/docs/2_community_services/community_information/owning_dogs_and_cats.pdf

I believe that if a chipped Cat is caught three times in the reserve at Cremorne Point it is destroyed and the fines for the owners are quite heavy for the first two times. If a Cat is caught in the reserve that is not micro chipped it is destroyed

This I feel should be national policy

Yep, here in Moreton Bay Region a cat must be kept on your property and off your property it can be trapped and the ranger comes and picks it up and take it to the pound.

Well, the post was really about the piss weak reasons people can justify having a cat, which are very similar to reasons that didn't hold weight when applied to gun ownership.

But I keep my gun inside the house and it only ever leaves the house to go to the rifle range. Sorry mate not good enough, you've got to join a gun club, register your gun and keep it in a gun locker. And only certain breeds of guns are allowed. And we may drop in some time to check you're compliant. Yes officer.

Maybe you should have to have a licence (complete a course to get it) to have a cat, have it wear a GPS Tracker that reports to the council web site, with fines issued on the spot for the cat being outside your yard. Doesn't protect any wild life that enters your yard though.

I was recently doing work on a rural property and the owner had set up one of these Electric-Dog-Fences about 8 years about and it never missed a beat. The only time the dogs got through it was when they might be chasing a rabbit at full pelt (pun intended). Once the dog has accidentally gone through it, they stop and wait to be brought back in. (owner has to turn it off and drag them back across the line). This company sells them for cats.

Yep, ferrel dogs are a big issue as well. Plus some domestic dogs have fun when their owners are not home. If it isn't in a cage or a bowl then maybe you should start being a responsible pet owner and look into these devices. Ah, but my gun never leaves the house.

As paddles said, Responsible cat (or dog) ownership.

One of the things which needs to be taken into consideration when discussing the subject is the massive influence of the petfood and petcare industry.

I always have a bit of a cynical chuckle when I see the advertising which we are bombarded with encouraging people to take on pets for what ever the reason. The real reason being of course that people in many cases are taking on pets because the petfood industry is looking to constantly increase it's customer base.

Piss weak indeed

Im all for domestic cats being regulated so they don't become strays, or breed strays that become feral.

The problems with your arguments are that a lot of what you're saying already exists. Cats have to be spayed unless they belong to a registered breeder, they also must be micro chipped and registered. As far as i know, thats nationally. A lot of councils are also considering banning cats roaming the streets on a curfew or permanent basis.

People don't own cats to head out bush with them and let them hunt native wildlife. They own them for companionship, usually where no other option exists. You're trying to paint an evil picture of what domestic cats could mean for native wildlife and connect them to feral cats, which as japie half stated are practically a different species now.

Have you ever been fishing Crusoe? If you have, you've more than likely killed more native species in a few innings than a domestic cat will in a lifetime.

Have a read of this. The post was about native birds being killed. Oh my cats not feral, so this doesn't apply to me. Well, where do you think the feral cats came from.

Oh this can't be true, the kill numbers are too high. I think Australia would be better off without cats.
